Whether the everyday or the extraordinary, shoes have captivated the world for centuries, which is why London’s esteemed Victoria and Albert Museum have made footwear the focus with their exhibition ‘Shoes: Pleasure and Pain’, looking into the design, craft and adoration of shoes. As a Hotel Corporate Member of the V&A, and just a stone’s throw from the Egerton House Hotel, we have designed a limited edition luxury stay, enabling visiting shoe lovers to put their best foot forward during their time in the capital. Read on to find out about this stellar showcase and how to make the most of your visit to London while seeking out the city’s best shoe boutiques.
Shoes: Pleasure and Pain
With over 200 pairs of extraordinary shoes, this exhibition by The V&A features both contemporary footwear and those dating back nearly 2000 years. The key to this showcase though is its exploration of the role shoes have had in our everyday lives throughout time and the power they have to transform society.
From the power shoes grant in folklore to their use as a status symbol, the exhibition gives a much deeper insight than first might appear. While you’re at the museum, take a look around the other exhibits too, where a pair of ancient Egyptian sandals, entirely crafted from gold leaf, and shoes that were worn by Queen Victoria are both on display.
Top Shoe Boutiques
Inspired by this showcase, step into some of London’s finest shoe boutiques. Just around the corner from the museum you’ll find the Sloane Street outlet of Salvatore Ferragamo, which with 100 years of expertise under its belt, has counted Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana among its high profile clients. Staying in the area, stop by Christian Louboutin’s store on Motcomb Street too, for a pair of statement red-soled heels.
Within Knightsbridge’s famous department store, Harrods, Shoe Heaven is a sight to behold, spread across the store’s fifth floor and featuring 17 individual boutiques. There are over 100,000 pairs of shoes on sale here, including designs by Charlotte Olympia, Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo.
Step out in Style
Why stay for in London one night when you can stay for two, especially when situated in one of the Egerton House Hotel’s luxury suites. The two-night ‘Step Out in Style’ stay enables you to do just that. And to tailor the package to footwear enthusiasts, two exhibition tickets are included. After a hearty English breakfast, stroll from the hotel in the heart of Knightsbridge, to immerse yourself in the history of sky-high heels, chopines and classic Oxfords at the V&A.
Back at the hotel, the cocktail bar beckons with a complimentary Killer Heels cocktail for her and a Clean Shaven cocktail for him. And after a day on your feet, be pampered with a pedicure in the hotel suite or a traditional wet shave at Murdock London.
With both ‘Shoes: Pleasure and Pain’ and ‘Step Out in Style’ running until the end of January, there’s still just enough time to jump in feet first for a truly unique London experience, while staying at The Egerton House Hotel.
