DESTINATION NEWS

What's hot in London this weekend?

The weekend is nigh and once again there is no shortage of exciting goings on in the capital, including a performance of Tamerlano.

Taking place at the Royal Opera House, this is the perfect way to begin exploring the cultural delights that London has to offer.

Lovers of Baroque opera will need no introduction to this tale of love and hate which follows the unfortunate chain of events triggered by Tamerlano spurning his betrothed in favour of Bajazet's daughter.

For couples enjoying a romantic weekend away, it will make for thrilling Friday night entertainment.

Alternatively, those who prefer a night of music can make their way to Cadogan Hall and enjoy a performance from the BBC Big Band.

The group will play songs from some of the most iconic films ever made, including themes from Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Deerhunter and the unmistakable Pink Panther Score.

Couples can continue the movie fun by heading to the BFI Southbank the following day and enjoying productions from some of the world's most prominent female filmmakers at the Birds Eye View festival.

Now in its sixth year, the showcase is a platform for female directors, actresses and others involved in the industry to shine and introduce audiences to some of the most impressive movies from around the world.

Highlights of this year's festival include the UK premiere of US/Palestinian drama Amreeka and the powerful Entre Nos.

If it is art that one desires then the British Museum's Kingdom of Ife: Sculptures from West Africa exhibition is not to be missed.

Examples of brass, copper, stone and terracotta sculpture will be on display, showing visitors the artistic heritage from this once great city state in what is now known as south-west Nigeria.

Families spending a few days in the capital can head to the Barbican and take part in the Do Something Different Weekend, where mum, dad and the kids can lose their inhibitions and take part in a fun-packed stimulating weekend of theatre, dance, music and more.

Highlights include the LSO Concert for under 5s, Bollywood dancing, the family poetry performance and the Indian lantern workshop, where the whole family can discover their creative side.

Whatever visitors decide to do, they will not be disappointed and neither will they be let down by the comfort and class at the luxury London hotel the Egerton House hotel.
