Event: See the world’s oldest insect
Date: All year
Visitors to the luxury London hotel Egerton House often note the comfort and quality of service they receive while staying.
The hotel makes everyone feel like a million dollars and those who opt for the 3 Nights for the Price of 2 will enjoy an evening's stay absolutely free.
Not far from Egerton House is the National History Museum, a place which a rather interesting insect calls its home.
It is specimen number In38234, or known more commonly as the oldest fossil insect anywhere in the world.
Preserved in a fragment of Rhynie Chert, the insect was collected by the Reverend W Cran and dated June 26th 1919.
The discovery of this specimen was a very significant one, as prior to this, the oldest known fossils of flying insects were 320 million years old, but this finding suggested to scientists that wings may have evolved much earlier than many had thought.
