King Lear at the Young Vic Theatre

Event: King Lear
Date: January 29th until March 28th

A tale of love, honour and deception will be told in London next month when Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear comes to the stage at the Young Vic Theatre.

King Lear is a man whose best years are behind him and realising this he decides to divide his kingdom between the three daughters he cherishes above all others.

He asks his girls how much they love him, to which Goneril and Regan both proclaim their undying love and admiration for him.

This is music to the old man's ears and he promptly gives them a share of the land and promises them marriage to the Duke of Albany and the Duke of Cornwall respectively.

Cordelia, his youngest and favourite daughter, refuses to massage her father's ego, claiming instead that she loves him in the way a child should.

Lear is unimpressed with this response and duly gives her none of the kingdom, his pride bruised by his offspring's stubborn refusal to flatter him.

This sets off a chain of events which sees the foolish royal banish the Earl of Kent and other figures who have been loyal to him during his reign, while allowing those with ulterior motives to move in and claim his wealth.

He slowly loses his mind and realises the honesty he betrayed results in his youngest daughter dying before her time, which breaks his heart and eventually leads to his own demise.

A place where no such events occur is the luxury London hotel the Egerton House.

Here, guests can look forward to a full English breakfast each day, afternoon tea, a complimentary appointment with a personal shopper at Harrods or Harvey Nichols and much more by booking the Shop Til You Drop package.
